Hong Kong Transitioning into Fintech 3.0 Era

Hong Kong FinTech Week 2025 marked a significant milestone as the region’s flagship fintech event celebrated its 10th anniversary. Bringing together more than 45,000 attendees and over 1,000 speakers from 120 economies, the four-day conference delivered a clear and consistent message: Hong Kong is entering the Fintech 3.0 era, moving beyond experimentation toward the large-scale deployment of financial innovation.

In a future where artificial intelligence, tokenization, and digital infrastructure are seamlessly embedded into everyday financial services, the Hong Kong government and regulators are actively laying the foundation for this transformation. AI is rapidly becoming a core component of financial infrastructure, with growing adoption of generative AI across the city’s financial institutions. In response, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has outlined plans for a shared AI infrastructure and expanded sandbox programmes to accelerate responsible deployment. Tokenization also emerged as a major theme throughout the event. Discussions highlighted the growing momentum behind tokenized deposits, money market funds, and government bonds. The HKMA and Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) outlined plans to develop practical, real-world use cases for tokenized assets, beginning with tokenized money market funds through initiatives such as Project Ensemble. These developments signal a shift from proof-of-concept projects toward institutional-scale adoption. Meanwhile, digital assets are entering a more mature regulatory phase. The SFC’s policy enabling licensed Virtual Asset Trading Platforms (VATPs) to connect their order books with overseas affiliates is expected to enhance liquidity, improve price discovery, and strengthen market efficiency. For investors, this evolving regulatory framework reinforces Hong Kong’s ambition to become a leading hub for digital asset innovation and next-generation financial services.

Parallel to the Hong Kong FinTech Week, the SPV team had the privilege of attending the exclusive satellite event co-organized by the Consulate General of Canada to Hong Kong and Macao and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong. The event featured insightful panel discussions on the future of cross-border finance and practical legal frameworks for operating across the Canada-HK-GBA regions, while a number of Canadian startups showcased innovative solutions in fintech, blockchain, and Agentic AI.
